MARTYN'S MIX - CHAMONIX 97-99 PHOTOS 5

To the right of the Aiguille du Midi is the Bosson glacier - the largest ice fall in Europe - and being incredibly steep it is always a bright white colour whereas other flatter glaciers such as the Mer de Glace are grey because they are covered in scree (loose rocks and boulders). the next 2 photos in the series show other sections of this glacier, reached by quite a long chair-lift ride.

This is following on down from the previous photo. This is where the Bosson glacier reaches it steepest point.

At the bottom of the glacier where the ice finally comes to a halt - with glacial water cascading from the bottom. The glacier can extend or retreat quite a lot during a year depending on the weather conditions.

I have put together the 3 previous photos of the Bosson glacier to give you some idea of the size of it. The separate photos don't quite fit together perfectly but they are close enough. In the 1950s an Air India plane crashed near the summit of Mont Blanc (you cannot see it here but it is round behind the Aiguille du Midi at the top of this photo). One of the wheels was found at the bottom of the glacier some 25 years later - that gives you some idea of how slowly the ice in a glacier moves.
